Running a Small Business

Running a Small Business

I love having a small business.

It is in my blood and it is what I was made to do.

Sure it comes with its challenges and bad days (like any other job) but the benefits (for me) always outweigh the negatives.

Even rainy days can be fun when you work together!

If you are on the fence or thinking about starting your own small business, I thought I would share some of the good, bad and ugly...

The flexibility owning your own business offers, is the BEST!  When Lily has a school event during the middle of the day, I can almost always make it work.  Is the weather picture perfect for a day on the boat?  My business partner can almost always figure out a schedule to take at least half the day off.

Or even if the weather isn't picture perfect...Lily's field day was a wet one!  But we were able to participate, no problem.

On the flip side, there is ALWAYS work to be done and mine is always looking at me as my office is located in our living room.  I always have a list of a million things that need to be accomplished.  Some people are better at handling this situation, but if you are like me, it is hard to stop and take a break when there is so much that needs to be done.  Thankfully, I do have a business partner that helps keep a healthy balance and who has no problem leaving the lists behind and taking a break on the lake, and most always drags me along.  Taking a break does wonders and is a key part to keeping those positive business vibes flowing.

My office that is located in our living room.

Being a business owner is exciting.  You learn so much.  The business dynamic is very interesting to me.  I love figuring out ways to do things more efficiently.  It's fun experimenting with new lines and products and getting feedback from customers.  I am a hands on learner.  Those accounting classes in college-yuk!  BORING!  And though my grades showed I did well, I really had no idea what accounting was all about.  Now that I get to apply it to our business, it makes sense and is even a tad fun.  BUT, I definitely find value in having an accountant you trust and feel comfortable contacting.  I am comfortable with the day to day operations but it is very nice to have someone on our team that keeps up with the current tax laws, helps find deductions, etc.

Having a small business also forces me to learn about some things that I really have no desire to learn about and spend time on.  Health insurance and retirement are two of those items that are important but personally, I will never have an interest.  Thankfully, this year we took the time to sit down with a financial adviser who helped us figure out retirement plans along with funds for Lily's future.  We also spent numerous hours researching insurance but finally found a plan we felt comfortable with and worked for us.  I am glad these items are taken care of for the time being.  If I did not have to be employed by another, I would love for my employer to handle these for us!

It's always a good idea to save money when you are self employed!

Owning our own business has its ups and downs but no matter the day, I would not change it.  Our work is fulfilling.  We get to do what we love for a living.  When I think of the blessings in my life our business is close to the top of the list!

But, I am not gonna lie.  I am ready for a vacation just like most others!!!

Take me away!
